Garden*Hood Turns Six

Special Anniversary Flower * Hour
Saturday, October 24th from 3pm – 5pm

G*H sign raisingOn an unseasonably cold and dreary day (October 15, to be exact) way back in 2009, Garden*Hood opened its gates for the very first time.  We had much more than drizzly weather against us on opening day.  Just passing was the most devastating drought the Southeast had experienced in nearly 100 years, and the nation was just settling into the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.

And yet, when we swung wide our gates in streamed real live customers.  They didn’t care that we didn’t have a proper cash register and had to hand-write each receipt, or that the nursery was only half built.  We had no shade section, no trees-and-shrubs area, no space for annuals and only one employee — yours truly!  The very first person to make a purchase was none other than Georgia gardening legend Walter Reeves.  (He bought a 1-gallon Sedum ‘Mediovariegatum.’)  People asked if we were crazy, and we said unequivocally, YES!

Fortunately we weren’t the only ones.  Turns out there is an entire spectrum of Crazy Plant People here in Atlanta and throughout Georgia who came out to support us that first fall.  We were living on little more than a lick and a prayer and the firm belief that if we planted it, people would come. And you did, and still do.

Together we’ve weathered ice and snow, torrential rains, blistering heat, bugs of all shapes and sizes, plagues of doubt (Will ANYTHING ever grow in this ONE SPOT?), and the countless bizarre and wondrous incidents that occur daily along Boulevard. In short, you’ve been here with us every step of the way, and we’d like to raise a glass in your honor.  Join us this Saturday, Oct. 24 from 3:00-5:00pm for an anniversary Flower Hour to kick off the fall planting season in true G*H style.

Drinks and tasty bites provided by our neighbor and longtime partner-in-garden-parties Stone Soup Kitchen.  Also available, glorious, wondrous, you-can’t-live-without-them plants brought to you by Garden*Hood.  And six remarkable years in business courtesy of YOU.  We couldn’t be more thrilled, amazed, and humbled by the unwavering support you’ve shown us.  We can’t wait to see what the future holds.  Here’s to many happy returns!
