Featured Plants

Rosa 'Caldwell Pink'

Discovered in Caldwell, Texas, this ever-blooming rose fills out quickly to form a well-behaved, compact shrub with minimal pruning required.

Clusters of carnation-like lilac-pink flowers cover the plant from late spring through frost.

Excellent disease resistance and heat tolerance.

Equally wonderful planted in drifts or as a single specimen in the mixed border.

Grows 4’ tall and wide.

Site in full to part sun.

Not fussy about soil conditions. Extremely drought tolerant once established.

Rosa 'Lafter'

Although classified as a hybrid tea, ‘Lafter’ grows more like a shrub rose.

Introduced by Brownwell in 1948.

Semi-double melon-with-hints-of-yellow flowers have been described as “the color of a glowing sunset.”

Blooms successively from late spring through fall. Fragrant.

Exceptional disease resistance.

Grows 4’-6’ tall and wide.

Full to part sun.

Average soil.

Acer shirasawanum ‘Jordan’

Deciduous upright but bushy tree with lime-green leaves that emerge super-bright in spring. As they mature they take on an attractive orange margin, finally exploding into flame red, orange and gold in fall. Deciduous.

This specimen works well with Physocarpus ‘Diablo’ and Miscanthus ‘Adagio’ or in front of Juniperus ‘Burkii’ for a real contrast.

Grows 8’ tall and half as wide in 10 years.

Full sun to part shade. Will be greener in more shade.

Amended, moist but well drained soils.

Acer palmatum 'Okukuji Nishiki'

Green, palmate leaves edged in pink and cream emerge in spring with more cream in summer. Fall color is red before dropping to reveal the architecturally interesting green-orange stems and trunk.

Overall form is upright and bushy and takes well to selective pruning.

Use as a specimen against darker conifers or as a container plant.

Mature height is 8’-10’. Slow-growing.

Site in strong morning sun and afternoon shade in summer. All day sun in winter is A-okay.

Amended, well-drained soil. Average water needs once established.

Acer palmatum ‘Kurenai jishi’

A compact, deciduous shrubby tree whose leaves emerge a deep crimson and mature to more copper tones. Fall color is a bonanza of yellows, oranges and reds.

Lateral branches overlap for a natural bonsai look.

Introduced by famed Japanese Maple expert, Masayoshi Yano.

Great specimen plant for containers or in the front of the mixed bed. Pairs well with Carex ‘Blue Bunny’ or Acorus ‘Variegata’.

Grows 3’-4’ tall and slightly less wide in 10 years.

Best color in morning sun and afternoon shade.

Amended, moist but well-drained soil.

Acer palmatum ‘Seiun kaku’

Small, deciduous tree with a lot of personality!

Deeply lobed leaves emerge lime green in spring, mature to forest green by summer and then explode into a display of reds, oranges, purples and yellows in fall.

Lateral branches grow horizontally and then branch vertically. This gives it a natural bonsai look without all the work!

Specimen.

Grows 10’ tall and wide in 10 years. More vigorous than ‘Mikawa Yatsabusa’.

Morning sun or high filtered light all day.

Amended, moist but well-drained soil.

Hosta ‘Stiletto’

Herbaceous perennial with very narrow, rippled, medium green leaves with a cream margin.

Purple striped flowers on upright scapes top the foliage in midsummer.

Good border or edging addition to the shade garden. Roots grow sideways so this is a great choice for erosion control on difficult slopes.

Pairs well with Heuchera and lacy ferns.

Grows 1’ tall x 2’ wide. Divide in spring every three years to maintain the undulation found in the juvenile leaves.

Part shade to shade.

Amended, moist, well-drained soil.

Gardenia 'Heaven Scent'

Tiny, lustrous evergreen leaves are the perfect backdrop for this gardenia’s showy blooms.
Covered in 1” single-petalled flowers May to June and sporadically into the fall.
Small stature makes it perfect for containers or in masses as a low foundation planting.
Grows to only 2’ tall x 2’ wide.
Site in sun to partial shade and amended, well-drained soil.
